Static vs Dynamic QR Code
A static QR encodes your destination directly into the pattern. A dynamic QR encodes a short link that redirects through a provider. Each has a real cost — pick deliberately.
| Feature | Static QR | Dynamic QR |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free, forever | Monthly subscription ($5–$50/mo) |
| Destination editable | No — re-print to change | Yes — edit anytime |
| Works offline | Yes | Needs redirect server online |
| Scan analytics | None | Counts, geo, device, time |
| Privacy for scanner | High — data encoded directly | Lower — provider sees every scan |
| Survives vendor shutdown | Yes — encoded data is permanent | No — link dies if provider shuts down |
| Best for | WiFi, vCards, packaging, signage, payments | A/B marketing tests, time-bound campaigns |
The hidden cost of dynamic QR codes
Most "free" QR generators are actually dynamic-QR services in disguise. The code you download works for the first few weeks, but every scan routes through the provider's server. The moment your trial ends, every printed code stops working. This has happened repeatedly — and it is why permanent signage should never use a dynamic QR from a free trial.
When dynamic makes sense
If you genuinely need to change the destination after printing (a seasonal landing page, an A/B test, a campaign URL), and you are willing to pay a monthly fee forever, a dynamic QR is the right tool. Otherwise, a static QR is the safer, cheaper choice.
